Elections Do Make A Difference

Weeks after Los Angeles District Attorney, Steve Cooley, famously and incorrectly declared victory in the race for Attorney General, Kamala Harris held press conferences in San Francisco and Los Angeles thanking the voters of California for electing her California's first woman and first mixed-race Attorney General.

According to a story in the Daily Breeze, in her modest and emotion filled victory speech Harris "promised to continue Brown's emphasis on combating global warming and enforcing environmental protections." Harris added, "As a daughter of California, I pride myself and us living in a state that has always been known as the source of change. So goes California, goes the rest of the country." 

CLCV endorsed Harris, the San Francisco District Attorney, for this post in the primary and again in the general election. Harris received the endorsement in the primary after she convinced the board of directors that her record of environmental leadership and solid commitment to continue that leadership made her the outstanding choice from a field of fine candidates.

Steve Cooley, on the other hand, had no interest in participating in CLCV's endorsement process and rejected our offers for him to do so. As Los Angeles District Attorney, Cooley dismantled that office's environmental enforcement unit and did no significant environmental prosecutions in his two terms.
