Why the EPA needs California

For the first time in our nation's history, the Environmental Protection Agency plans to place limits on carbon pollution for new power plants.

Coal and gas-burning power plants are the top contributors to carbon pollution in the U.S., and yet we have never set a limit on how much pollution they can produce. More than any other contributing factor, reckless carbon pollution is causing worldwide temperatures to rise with dangerous, widespread consequences. Today the Environmental Protection Agency held a "listening session" in San Francisco, one of 11 cities hosting such public hearings across the country to "solicit ideas and input from the public and stakeholders about the best Clean Air Act approaches to reducing carbon pollution from existing power plants."
