In California, the Oil Empire Strikes Back

Sep 15, 2015

We have the best legislature money can buy, and Big Oil just proved it.

The oil industry used their limitless war chest to fund a multi-million dollar fear-mongering campaign against two major climate proposals, ending the 2015 legislative session with two huge victories for their profits and two devastating losses for our future. But that’s not the whole story, as I’ll explain in a moment. Read More >

California Legislature Passes Historic Climate Bill

Sep 11, 2015

California just made climate history once again. Late Friday night, California lawmakers took the final vote on a major climate change bill SB 350 – and it passed.

In other words, California just passed the boldest, farthest reaching climate change legislation in the nation. SB 350 passed thanks to the tremendous outpouring of grassroots support and activism. Read More >

New Fracking Study Confirms Risks to Water, Wildlife, and Communities

Jul 23, 2015

The recent release of an independent, state-funded study on fracking shows that our long-standing concerns about the risks are justified. This latest revelation comes on the heels of months of scandal involving oil companies and the state agencies that are supposed to regulate them but, by their own admission, have failed to protect Californians' health and safety.

Californians have heard a lot about fracking over the past few years. Our concerns have only grown into outrage as more evidence of its risks to our communities, our water, our health and safety has come to light. Read More >

Climate Change Bills SB 350 & SB 32 Advance to Final Committee

Jul 17, 2015

Two major climate change bills (SB 350 and SB 32) won approval this week in the California Assembly Committee on Natural Resources, and now both bills are heading to the Appropriations Committee – the final committee they'll need to win over before they're eligible for floor votes by the full Assembly. Citizens and Lawmakers Speak Out to Protect Water Supply

Mar 25, 2015

It's simply amazing. More than 950 Californians responded to our request for Letters to the Editor about the current threat to our federally-protected aquifers posed by underground waste injection wells. Protecting California’s limited groundwater is vitally important to all of us, so we expected a lot of letters – but we honestly never expected nearly 1,000 supporters would write in! It's incredibly gratifying and encouraging to see such a huge response! Read More >

PETITION: We delivered 22,000 signatures!

Mar 10, 2015

In just a few hours, we're going to testify in Sacramento before a Joint Oversight Hearing on Ensuring Groundwater Protection. Californians have a right to clean drinking water, but our state government is permitting vast quantities of post-drilling waste fluids to be injected into our protected aquifers – it just doesn't add up. Governor Brown Signs Historic Groundwater Laws

Sep 16, 2014

Just minutes ago, I stood in Governor Jerry Brown's office while he signed historic legislation regulating California groundwater.

Incredibly, until today, California was the only western state without groundwater regulations. For decades, Californians have used more groundwater than we have replenished, and water levels have dropped at an alarming rate. In the current drought, as other water resources have declined, groundwater has been supplying more than half of California’s water needs. Read More >

Your Right to Know What's in Your Couch

Aug 18, 2014

One would expect firefighters would know a thing or two about fire safety. So when they speak up and tell the state legislature that adding pounds of flame retardant chemicals to single pieces of furniture doesn't protect them, or folks whose houses or businesses catch fire, and in fact puts their lives MORE at risk, you would hope our lawmakers would listen. Big Oil: Up to its old tricks

Jul 17, 2014

Big Oil is up to its old tricks. They've just launched a manipulative assault on AB 32, the most important clean air and climate law passed in decades for California--and arguably the nation--all to avoid taking responsibility to reduce their pollution. In a nutshell, oil companies think they deserve a free pass to pollute as much as they always have. Read More >

A New Year, but California's still Fracked

Jan 3, 2014

It's a new year, but California's still fracked. And during the next few days, we have an opportunity to say something about it to those who are supposed to be in charge of oil drilling in California.

There are only a few days left to make a public comment on proposed fracking regulations. We're asking our supporters who are concerned about fracking to tell California's Department of Conservation it's time for a moratorium on fracking in California. Read More >

Toxic Couches soon to be Extinct

Nov 21, 2013

Toxic couches are one species we can't wait to see go extinct.

Today, Governor Jerry Brown’s Administration announced a change in California regulations that allows the sale of toxic-free furniture. In other words, furniture manufacturers can now make couches without adding several pounds of dangerous, carcinogenic flame retardant chemicals.

Budget deal undermines voters on climate change

Jun 11, 2013

Statement on the State Budget Deal: By CLCV CEO Sarah Rose

California voters expect our leaders to make timely investments in activities that fight climate change, create jobs, and improve the environment and public health. Each time the question of whether our state should invest in climate change solutions and a clean energy economy is put to a vote of the people, including Proposition 39, they overwhelmingly vote “yes.” And yet today, our elected leaders have delayed the investment in the future that Californians have said they want. This is a particular insult to voters that the Governor used the passage of Prop 39 last November – which should have made our efforts to fight climate change more robust – as an excuse to borrow the revenue. Governor Brown's Proposed Loan Has Environmentalists Seeing Red

May 24, 2013

California Governor Jerry Brown earned CLCV's endorsement when he ran for governor (again) in 2010, and he's earned decent scores on our annual California Environmental Scorecard since then. He's been a champion for California's pioneering climate change solutions; in fact, he spoke to a group of scientists this week, warning "it's over" in five years, unless we do more to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions that are cooking the planet. But lately, environmentalists are "seeing red" over Brown's proposal to borrow $500 million from the state's cap-and-trade revenues. Read More >

Toxic couches: In a home near you?

Nov 28, 2012

What you don't know about your couch may not kill you, but it could definitely harm you and your family.

So listen up: A new study by UC Berkeley and Duke University researchers reveals that an astounding 85% of U.S. couches contain toxic flame retardant chemicals. Earlier studies show that these chemicals migrate from the foam in the couches into house dust and into our bodies. Young children are at even more risk of ingesting the toxic dust while they crawl around on the floor and put their hands in their mouths. Read More >

State Parks Belong to Us All

Jul 26, 2012

Like so many of our allies in the environmental community, all of us at CLCV were shocked and deeply saddened at the news that staff at the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) had hidden $54 million for as long as twelve years.

Our parks belong to all of us, and this represents an extreme violation of the public’s trust.  All Californians have the right to be angry and we are owed a full explanation of how this happened. Read More >

Victory for California's kids: Governor signs BPA ban

Oct 4, 2011

It's my second day back at CLCV from maternity leave, and this new mom just got the best welcome-back news: Governor Jerry Brown has signed the bill banning toxic BPA in baby bottles and children's sippy cups! This is a huge victory for the thousands of babies who will be born in California this year--including mine--and for environmental advocates, who have worked for years to make this common-sense ban on a toxic chemical in children's feeding products a reality.
