Groundswell: CLCV Blog

Last Friday marked the last day of this legislative session, ending a very busy month for CLCV in the Capitol.

Though CLCV worked on - and worked with you on - many bills this year, we had five top priorities that held true through the year:

In politics you don’t hear the phrase “living legend” used very often without bursting out in laughter (hyperbole is ubiquitous in this business after all), but there are still a few individuals worthy of such a title and California Congressman Henry Waxman is one of them.

(Updated 8/23/12). One of my favorite movies is Groundhog Day, where Bill Murray's weatherman character is trapped living the same day over and over again.

But one of my least-favorite real-life versions of Groundhog Day--where several interest groups try to push through major changes to California's most important environmental law at the last minute--played out yet again in the state Capitol in the waning days of the legislative session.

It was a capitol day for dozens of environmental advocates.

Ever wonder where you can find California's biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions?

Just announced: Congressman Dan Lungren is the newest member of the national League of Conservation Voters' "Flat Earth Five."

LCV today named Rep. Dan Lungren (CA-3) to their new $1.5 million “Flat Earth Five” campaign, which aims to defeat five climate change deniers in the U.S. House of Representatives this election cycle. As part of the program, LCV will work to defeat Rep. Lungren, who has claimed that “ideological bias” is driving efforts to combat climate change.

Like so many of our allies in the environmental community, all of us at CLCV were shocked and deeply saddened at the news that staff at the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) had hidden $54 million for as long as twelve years.

Our parks belong to all of us, and this represents an extreme violation of the public’s trust.  All Californians have the right to be angry and we are owed a full explanation of how this happened.

It's time for the state of California to follow the lead of more than 50 of our cities and dump the plastic bag.

Named by Guinness World Records as "the most ubiquitous consumer item in the world," single-use plastic bags are a leading source of pollution worldwide, including in California. Californians use and throw away 12 billion (yes, that's billion with a "b") of these bags each year with devastating consequences for marine life.

Do you want the good news first, or the bad news?

I'm a "good news first" kind of person, so here it is: The Food and Drug Administration announced yesterday that it is now illegal for baby bottles and sippy cups to contain the toxic chemical bisphenol-A (BPA). The announcement comes less than a year after California passed the Toxin-Free Infant and Toddlers Act, a ban on BPA in these products made or sold in California authored by Assemblymember Betsy Butler.

Okay, CLCV can’t really make it rain. Considering the water problems California will be facing in the coming years, we wish we could. We’d probably even settle for making it drizzle.
